Yousif Al-KhderHello everyone! My name is Yousif and I'm running for the student-at-large seat on senate. I'm a Management Engineering student currently in my 3A term, and I've had various experiences during my undergraduate career that I believe make me suitable for this position. If you have any questions, please post them on this group and I will try to get to you as soon as possible. ******************** MY PLATFORM CONNECT WITH FACULTY AND STAFF MEMBERS ON SENATE As we all know, the undergrad student representation on senate consists of only 9 votes. If elected, I will connect with faculty and staff members who are on senate in order to discuss our point of view on any issue and to try to gain their votes. COMMUNICATE WITH ALL STUDENT SENATORS I plan to get to know every single student senator and communicate with them in a constant matter in order to be able to represent all the faculties on senate. I plan to meet with the senators before every meeting, especially if there is a critical motion to be voted on. OBTAIN OPINIONS FROM ALL THE FACULTIES As an at-large senator candidate, I would like to know what students from all the different faculties have to say about any certain issue. To accomplish this, I plan either on communicating with the executive team of each faculty society (ASU, EngSoc, AHSUM, SciSoc, MathSoc, ESS) or attending some of their meetings. ******************** UPCOMING ISSUES ON SENATE There are a couple of issues that will soon be discussed on senate: ORIENTATION WEEK As we all know, orientation week was very close to being shortened, but thankfully, due to the great student senators team we have and our Provost Dr. Hamdullahpur, orientation week was not shortened. However, this decision is only temporary, and this issue will come up again soon. From my experience in orientation week, I plan to represent you effectively if this topic comes up again. For those students who do not enjoy in participating in orientation week and prefer to take the time off, I completely understand, however this decision still affects you. If orientation week is shortened, your time off will be cut off, and instead you will have to go to class earlier than what you are used to. PDENG PDEng is currently a "hot topic" on campus, because of the embarassing external review report that came out last term. Being a campus-wide senator, I will represent all faculties, which includes Engineering, and being an Engineering student, I do go through PDEng (I wish I don't) just like any Engineering student. When PDEng will be brought up on senate, I assure you to fully represent your voices to every member of the senate so that we can improve PDEng. If WatPD is discussed on senate as well, I will represent you in the same manner discussed above. ******************** INVOLVEMENT AND VOLUNTEER WORK General: Currently member of Explorations student organizing committee (middle school Engineering outreach event) Attended several national and provincial conferences such as the Institute of Industrial Engineers 2010 National Student Conference at Windsor and the Engineering Students Societies' Council of Ontario 2009 AGM at Waterloo Assisted several faculty and staff members (including the Dean of Engineering and the CECS Director of student and faculty relations) in various ways during their visits to Dubai, represented UW and presented to potential students opportunites for student involvement on our campus. Visited the Dubai campus. Several directorships with the Engineering Society Iron Warrior (the Engineering Society newspaper) writer and staff member since Summer 2008 Iron Warrior (the Engineering Society newspaper) layout editor since Summer 2009 Orientation Week leader 2008, 2009 Education and academic related: Currently one of the EngSoc VP Education assistants, assisting the VP-Ed in various ways, including PDEng.
